Well, if I’m honest, the past 14 months has been a stretch that has required many doses of inspirational thoughts. While spending way more time than any human should ever spend in a hospital due to the illnesses of both of my parents, it was critical to find ways to focus my attention on other positive, life-giving thoughts. For my own mental health, it was a daily requirement to shift my attention so that I did not get pulled into the abyss of hopelessness.
I have never been more aware of the power of our thoughts and how they shape the world we move in and out of each day. Our thoughts can allow us to sit in dark spaces, but not be overcome by the darkness. Or, they can cause us to spiral deeper into a dark and lonely place. It’s a matter of what gets our focus—what we give our mind to. At many points along the journey, I was glad that I gave my mind to gratitude, to appreciation, and to honoring the positive feelings I have for my family and friends.
In some of my keynote speeches, I often use a surfing analogy to illustrate the point that Where You Look Is Where You Go! What gets our eyes, our focus, our attention everyday is the direction our lives head. Our mindfulness (or lack thereof) guides us throughout our days. But, it takes intentional practice, to shift our eyes and energy toward the items that are our highest priorities. When we are looking through a lens of gratitude and possibility, that is often what we see. When we look through a lens of negativity, of bitterness or skepticism, that is typically what we find.
So, below is a stream of reminders to myself — inspirational thoughts that I’m choosing to think about today and you’re welcome to join in, if you wish.
- Today is a unique and sacred opportunity, no matter where I sit
- I am grateful for the people and actions that brighten my world
- I am inspired by the thought that I get to make a contribution in the world today
- I choose kindness, patience, passion and possibility
- Today, I commit to focus on my highest priorities and stimulate progress
Good luck on the next leg of your journey. Remember, Where You Look Is Where You Go!
