I hear people say this phrase all the time, “He or She Is One Of The Best Keynote Speakers In The World.”
It usually happens after an event that I’ve spoken at and I’m mingling with the crowd afterward. I love hearing other people’s views on the best keynote speakers they’ve ever heard. No, they usually aren’t referencing me when they said it — I’m just happy to be mentioned within the same hemisphere as some that they do. But, something I said during my speech or the way it landed on them, reminded them of something special.
So, I usually probe further. I want to understand and learn what it is about the best keynote speakers in the world that resonates with them. I’m always learning and developing myself, and I love hearing what about the presentation was moving, compelling, and effective from their perspective.
Here’s the list I’ve gathered based on what I’ve been told from audiences across the country and around the world. The Best Keynote Speakers In The World…
- Are Real — you can see it and feel it pouring out of them that this isn’t just a performance, the content is part of them.
- Engage The Minds & Hearts — their content isn’t just something goofy or only about the information they have to exchange, but the entire experience engages the minds of the audience in ways that cause them to think and at the same time connects with their heart as a human being.
- Laugh — the speakers don’t take themselves too seriously and actively bring joy and humor into the room.
- Stimulate Action — it’s not just a speech to them, it is about leading positive change. You can see that the speaker is connected to and committed to change beyond the session.
As I reflect on those characteristics I’m struck by the fact that so many of them align with how people describe the best leaders, bosses, or people in their life. Whether we’re literally on the big stage or not, we all have the opportunity to live those elements with the people in our life and work.
