12:45 – There are 4 social awareness strategies to practice your own social competency as it relates to emotional intelligence.

  1. Names are powerful – The value of a name is powerful. Jason says when he does an event he often finds people say, “I can’t believe you remembered my name, how do you do it?” The secret, Jason reveals, is he tries really hard to remember and knows it’s important. A name is very important to everyone and shows respect and care when people say and remember them. They are very personal and hearing your name often gives people joy (whether they know it or not).
  2. Where you look is where you go – Jason talks about clearing away the clutter and the importance of it.
  3. Take the temperature in the room – Ask yourself the question, what energy would be helpful? What temperature in a room can you bring that would help where you are?
  4. Asking clarifying questions and the power in that – When we are in a meeting, before just speaking our opinion, make sure we ask clarifying questions to better understand someone else’s point of view. Seek to understand before your need to be understood. Don’t focus on your response, listen and get the whole picture. Say things like, “I heard you say this, tell me more about what you mean by that”.

Questions to Ponder

  1. What are you aware of with your own personal feelings and responses lately? Your own social awareness. What are you aware of in your own social relationships?
  2. What temperature do you want to set for the people around you? What temperature is needed for your team or your relationships?

Practice appreciation and gratitude for all that is within your control. Now is a chance for all of us to positively impact those around us and on our team. What is our response? How do we behave and help to shape the culture for those around us?
