“Authentic Leadership is Needed in the World Today.”

4:05 – Jason introduces today’s topic about the Great Resignation and why people are leaving work and what that meant to the workforce and companies and organizations. Employee experience and engagement goes up in companies that invest in emotional intelligence and are 2-5x more likely to hit targets and to delight customers. 9 out of 10 people say they would take a pay cut if it meant they could be part of a more meaningful culture. Be sure to listen to our multi-part series on the Great Resignation

8:55 – 72% of workers said they were surprised or had some sense of regret about the new position or company that they jumped to. Workers found the grass was always greener scenario and that the new positions they have taken are not all that different from what they had come from before. Nearly half, 48% surveyed said they tried to get their old jobs back!

11:16 – According to career counseling Zety, most want fair and good benefit packages but just as important, applicants want values that match their own at 62% of respondents. An astonishing 61% of people said they want the company they work for to have a mission that goes beyond making a profit and makes a difference. The research also shows that people want purpose, meaningful culture, and also to be part of a place that is committed to their development. Another important element is a strong brand reputation. People want to be a part of a culture that is growing, that is authentic, and that cares for them.

People want to be a part of a culture that is growing, that is authentic, and that cares for them.

15:55 – Jason talks about the best steps for personal growth and how organizations and companies can create compelling cultures to help it be the best at whatever it is you want to do.

18:00 – Jason talks about reforming an institution or practice and how it relates to opportunities for leaders right now. This is a chance to re-establish, re-vision, and re-create the future you want to be part of. It doesn’t just magically happen. Check out Jason’s Book, Thermostat Cultures for more on this topic.

Questions to Ponder

  1. What opportunities exist to reform your culture?
  2. In what ways could you use this opportunity to re-align your people?
  3. Is the future culture you are trying to create together clearly articulated and is it in motion?

Practice appreciation and gratitude for all that is within your control. Now is a chance for all of us to positively impact those around us and on our team. What is our response? How do we behave and help to shape the culture for those around us?

ABOUT THE THERMOSTAT

Conversations and micro-thoughts to engage your mind and heart.

A thermostat is proactive. It sets the temperature in a room. Controls the temperature. Regulates the temperature. But in today’s distracted, fast-paced and digital world, it’s easy for individuals and organizations to act more like thermometers, slipping into reactionary thinking, becoming scattered and inconsistent. The most compelling leaders, teams, organizations, families, or collection of humans of any kind operate in thermostat mode. They calibrate their mind and heart to set the temperature for the vision and culture they want to create. Jason Barger, globally celebrated author, keynote speaker, and founder of Step Back Leadership Consulting, is the host of The Thermostat, a podcast journey to discover authentic leadership, create compelling cultures and find clarity of mission, vision, and values.
