“Servant leaders are able to see a future that they want to be a part of and want to help create. “
4:15 – Jason introduces today’s topic. In the last episodes, we talked about the Great Resignation and what people are looking for in employment. Listen to some of the past season episodes for more on the Great Resignation and what it means to managers and your teams. Jason is now focusing on a 3-part series about Servant Leadership with this episode being the second of the three. The first episode on Servant Leadership focused on Awareness and you can listen to that here. Today we are focusing on Vision and characteristics of conceptualization, foresight, & persuasion.
8:42 – In 1998, Larry Spears established 10 characteristics of Servant Leadership and Jason talks about the concept of Servant Leadership. Servant leaders are able to see a future that they want to be a part of and want to help create. They can dream great dreams and have a vision and can articulate that to others around them. They are also able to use foresight and understand where they have been but also understand where they are now. Servant leaders are also able to understand the path in front of them and how their choices will impact future outcomes.
16:10 – Jason talks about what Servant leaders are and what they are not. Servant leadership is not soft by any means. Today Jason talks about Vision and what that means for leaders. How do you articulate your vision to others? Servant leaders work for others to understand the vision they are looking to create.
Questions to Ponder
- What vision for the future can you conceptualize that you want to be a part of?
- How does your past and current realities impact the decisions on your plate now?
- How can you help connect the mind and heart of those with you to help them see the compelling vision of the future?

ABOUT THE THERMOSTAT
Conversations and micro-thoughts to engage your mind and heart.
A thermostat is proactive. It sets the temperature in a room. Controls the temperature. Regulates the temperature. But in today’s distracted, fast-paced and digital world, it’s easy for individuals and organizations to act more like thermometers, slipping into reactionary thinking, becoming scattered and inconsistent. The most compelling leaders, teams, organizations, families, or collection of humans of any kind operate in thermostat mode. They calibrate their mind and heart to set the temperature for the vision and culture they want to create. Jason Barger, globally celebrated author, keynote speaker, and founder of Step Back Leadership Consulting, is the host of The Thermostat, a podcast journey to discover authentic leadership, create compelling cultures and find clarity of mission, vision, and values.
