4:00 – Leaders are working to grasp the concept of The Great Resignation and how to handle this. millions of people left their jobs in 2021. Today we are dealing with one of the elements that organizations and people can control and that is Attracting Talent. Jason talks about RAD and some of the episodes prior in this series that covered the other topics related to the Great Resignation. Listen to: RAD the secret to the Great Resignation. “Why is the Great Resignation happening?”

7:27 – Organizations are asking why? Why are so many people up and quitting their jobs? Jason dives into some of the research and data that suggests the psychological shift that has occurred during the pandemic has made people re-evaluate their lives to look for something more fulfilling. Research and studies paint a picture of why this is happening and Jason dives into reasons and data for why this is happening now.

9:00 – A Harvard Business Review study found that 9 out of 10 employees would take a pay cut to work for a more meaningful work culture. People want meaning, they want a culture that listens to them and values them and that employees are contributing to something greater than themselves. People are asking good questions now about what do employees want? What kind of work do employees want to do? It is bringing out good questions and discussions from companies, leaders, and teams.

“Attracting talent is an inside-out job; it starts internally… Culture is your competitive advantage”

11:52 – If your culture isn’t attractive internally, doesn’t honor people, or listen to people, and isn’t about connecting people to a bigger purpose and mission then all the research is showing your people will go somewhere else. For years, Jason has said, Culture is your greatest competitive advantage.

13:48 – We talked about RAD in the last episode about retaining talent, and today we are talking about Attracting Talent, and the next episode is about the ‘D’ or Developing Talent.

  1. INTERNAL CLARITY OF THE CULTURE – You cant have others buy into you unless YOU are bought in and YOU are sold on it.
  2. POSTERS HAVE TO BE IN YOUR PEOPLE – Having posters are important on the walls of your organization about your core values. We need to have language that helps drive behavior and need to realize that the real question is, “are the posters in your people?”.
  3. YOUR ONBOARDING STRATEGY BEGINS NOW – It doesn’t just begin when you hire someone, it begins now! The message that you are sharing with the world needs to match what is really happening.
  4. BRING A WHOLE PERSON MENTALITY – The research tells us that people dont just want a job and pay. They want something behind it, something that inspires them and is bigger than themselves, part of a meaningful culture. People want a place that cares about them as a whole person.

“Stay tuned for the rest of this multi-part series on the Great Resignation”

Questions to Ponder

  1. Do you have internal clarity on the culture you mean to create?
  2. Are your posters in your people and is that culture being lived? Do your values radiate through your people or is it just nice language on the wall?
  3. How is your onboarding first impression? What does it look like to other people?

Practice our own emotional intelligence. See others on the team and realize that we are the thermostats, we set the internal temperature for ourselves and others around us.

ABOUT THE THERMOSTAT

Conversations and micro-thoughts to engage your mind and heart.

A thermostat is proactive. It sets the temperature in a room. Controls the temperature. Regulates the temperature. But in today’s distracted, fast-paced and digital world, it’s easy for individuals and organizations to act more like thermometers, slipping into reactionary thinking, becoming scattered and inconsistent. The most compelling leaders, teams, organizations, families, or collection of humans of any kind operate in thermostat mode. They calibrate their mind and heart to set the temperature for the vision and culture they want to create. Jason Barger, globally celebrated author, keynote speaker, and founder of Step Back Leadership Consulting, is the host of The Thermostat, a podcast journey to discover authentic leadership, create compelling cultures and find clarity of mission, vision, and values.
