1:30 – Jason introduces the episode and mentions some past episodes to check out from the multi-part series about The Great Resignation which happened this season.

5:09 – Jason shares breaking news about the release of his new book coming out! It is complete and it is off at the publishers now. It is titled Breaking Oxygen: How Positive Leadership Gives Life to Winning Cultures.

“The new book is coming out in summer 2022!”

7:45 – Supply chain issues have also hit book publishers and although we aren’t able to give an official release date yet, we can say that it will be released in summer 2022! Jason thanks the team that has brought this book to life and talks about the process of releasing this new book. It is exciting to put this out into the world but naturally, there is a sense of anxiousness when releasing something new to how it will be received by others. The creative process is a personal one and sharing something that is filled with so much time, hard work, and thoughtfulness to everyone is a personal experience and brave journey.

9:41 – This marks Jason’s fourth book and shares his experience of writing his books and the process for releasing one. Each experience of writing is unique. In the first book, everything was new and it was a full creative exercise. Jason learned a lot about his creative process. Learn more or order Jason’s books on the website available here. Writing a book requires these 3 elements, 1. Gratitude. 2. Patience. 3. Courage.

13:44 – So why did Jason write this book? The last 2 years have shown us isolation, mental health issues, and reevaluating their lives and work. Jason reflected on his experience over the last 2 years and wrote this book because Jason is aware of the mindsets that he wants to breathe in to be the best “me” that he can be. It is also for you, for teams, for leaders out there and the research out there on elite performance and how the best teams are leveraging certain outcomes to create positive change.

17:06 – Why this metaphor of Breathing Oxygen? Breathing is essential to our existence. We are lucky that our body involuntarily breathes but we also can do it voluntarily to focus ourselves. There is good oxygen we can breathe in and there is good oxygen and mindsets that bring out the best in each other and there is also toxic air that we need to exhale. There is toxic gossip and false narratives that we need to get rid of. We can also be obsessed with breathing that in and the negativity and in a bad way it makes us feel better for ourselves. So what do we inhale and what are the mindsets we exhale and let go of?

21:05 – The book is divided into 6 key mindsets that leaders breathe to give life and energy to their teams. Packed with research and talking about how important it is for us to breathe in clarity, mission, and values and what we are trying to accomplish together. Inclusivity gives us life and energy to the people around us. Breathe in oxygen of grit, there will be obstacles and challenges along our path and so we need grit. The book also talks about rest and how important it is for us and for elite performance and how to rest. Lastly, about accountability and what that means in an organization.

26:50 – Jason discusses the launch of the book and the supply chain issues along the way but that the launch date will most likely be July or August and as soon as we know we will tell you on social media and our newsletter.

Questions to Ponder

  1. Who has breathed good oxygen into your life or career and made a significant impact on you?
  2. How could you breathe good oxygen to yourself and your team in the coming year?
  3. What are the mindsets that you hope to develop and support along the way?

Calibrating our own thermostat for ourselves and those around us. How we commit to breathing in good oxygen.

In the next episode, we will go over emotional intelligence in the workplace.

ABOUT THE THERMOSTAT

Conversations and micro-thoughts to engage your mind and heart.

A thermostat is proactive. It sets the temperature in a room. Controls the temperature. Regulates the temperature. But in today’s distracted, fast-paced and digital world, it’s easy for individuals and organizations to act more like thermometers, slipping into reactionary thinking, becoming scattered and inconsistent. The most compelling leaders, teams, organizations, families, or collection of humans of any kind operate in thermostat mode. They calibrate their mind and heart to set the temperature for the vision and culture they want to create. Jason Barger, globally celebrated author, keynote speaker, and founder of Step Back Leadership Consulting, is the host of The Thermostat, a podcast journey to discover authentic leadership, create compelling cultures and find clarity of mission, vision, and values.
