“The three main attributes of an anti-toxic culture are respect, inclusion, and meaning” – Tamara Myles

4:40 – Jason introduces Tamara Myles, who is a researcher and Positive Psychology Instructor at the University of Pennsylvania. Today she talks about her meaningful research on work cultures and the powerful experiences we all share after trauma and the growth that comes out of it.

10:00 – Tamara talks about post-traumatic growth and how future potential research will shed more light on how people and organizations changed, adapted, and grew post-pandemic. Her past research reiterates that creating culture is more important than ever. People won’t just magically show up. Retaining talent is important.

14:00 – Jason talks about a recent article Tamara had in Fast Company about anti-toxic cultures, Tamara explains the phraseology of this. Non-toxic is too neutral, so Tamara dissected the narrative and created the word, anti-toxic as it relates to workplace culture.

23:20 – Tamara mentions the toxic 5 behaviors in the workplace, toxic cultures not only show these but often encourage them with the classic, dog-eat-dog, taking credit for people’s work, etc. Tamara recommends the book Mastering Civility which actually shows just how important acknowledging appropriate credit in the workplace is.

  1. Disrespect
  2. Non-inclusive
  3. Unethical
  4. Cutthroat
  5. Abusive

32:00 – Tamara defines a thriving work culture. When the people thrive in 5 main pillars including: PERMA = Postive Emotion, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, and Accomplishments.

ABOUT THE THERMOSTAT

Conversations and micro-thoughts to engage your mind and heart.

A thermostat is proactive. It sets the temperature in a room. Controls the temperature. Regulates the temperature. But in today’s distracted, fast-paced and digital world, it’s easy for individuals and organizations to act more like thermometers, slipping into reactionary thinking, becoming scattered and inconsistent. The most compelling leaders, teams, organizations, families, or collection of humans of any kind operate in thermostat mode. They calibrate their mind and heart to set the temperature for the vision and culture they want to create. Jason Barger, globally celebrated author, keynote speaker, and founder of Step Back Leadership Consulting, is the host of The Thermostat, a podcast journey to discover authentic leadership, create compelling cultures and find clarity of mission, vision, and values.
