“The reality is that if we are thoughtful about developing our people and culture, the positive business metrics will follow”

3:16 – The one thing that we all identify is that things are changing. Jason shares a historical summary of the modern events and changes in technology that caused major shifts in our daily lives. From Uber to streaming, tech in the last few decades has changes our lives forever. From the shifts in tech to the talk of Ai now, it is all about our ability to navigate change and see a future that we want to create.

7:00 – Jason talks about Blackberry and the plummet they had from the top of the game to the bottom. You may remember when Blackberry’s were everywhere. In 2009, Blackberry accounted for nearly 50% of the cellphone market. By 2014, only 5 years later their market share had plummeted to less than 1%; so what happened? More importantly, what are the lessons for leaders from that example?

Here are the top 3 lessons from Blackberry’s plummet:

  1. We must see beyond where we are to see where it’s going. The CEO had the idea of a handheld device for sending and receiving emails. He famously rejected any ideas about apps or connecting to the internet. He thought all that the consumer wanted was email. He couldn’t see what people really wanted.
  2. We must have the ability to rethink our ideas and stimulate progress. Famously, Blackberry’s leadership rejected the notion that their product needed adjustment. Apple was about the change all of that with the iPhone.
  3. We must surround ourselves with people who help us stimulate progress. The more Jason reads, the more he sees that people around the Blackberry CEO didn’t listen to people around him and most remained silent around him.

15:00 – As leaders we have the opportunity to surround us with people to stimulate progress. This story gives us the opportunity to rethink our ideas and ask questions about what progress will look like next.

Questions to Ponder

  1. What on your team needs your eyes and vision for where things are heading rather than where they currently are?

  2. Do you and your team have the ability to rethink your ideas?

  3. Do you have people around you that challenge the status quo for your business to nudge things forward?

ABOUT THE THERMOSTAT

Conversations and micro-thoughts to engage your mind and heart.

A thermostat is proactive. It sets the temperature in a room. Controls the temperature. Regulates the temperature. But in today’s distracted, fast-paced and digital world, it’s easy for individuals and organizations to act more like thermometers, slipping into reactionary thinking, becoming scattered and inconsistent. The most compelling leaders, teams, organizations, families, or collection of humans of any kind operate in thermostat mode. They calibrate their mind and heart to set the temperature for the vision and culture they want to create. Jason Barger, globally celebrated author, keynote speaker, and founder of Step Back Leadership Consulting, is the host of The Thermostat, a podcast journey to discover authentic leadership, create compelling cultures and find clarity of mission, vision, and values.
