“Cultural dissonance is when our actions & behaviors do not align with the culture we say we want.

3:00 – Jason introduces today’s topic about cultural dissonance by defining some terms so that we can all start together on the same page. Culture is shaped every day by our actions. Our thinking impacts how we think about leadership; listen to the last great episode which dives into this topic and is a must for leaders right now going through any struggles.

4:40 – Every person helps to create the cultural ecosystem in healthy or unhealthy ways by the way they think, act, and interact. Cultural dissonance is when our actions & behaviors do not align with the culture we say we want. On today’s podcast, we are talking about Cultural Dissonance, what it means when the actions & behaviors do not align with the culture we say we are committed to creating. Is yours committed to strengthening the areas where cultural dissonance is occurring?

6:55 – Culture is dynamic, it is always changing and shifting. Every person in your team, and your family, contributes to shaping the cultural ecosystem; in healthy or unhealthy ways. Jason starts by defining the term dissonance and where it comes from. Dissonance is musical terminology and is a lack of harmony among musical notes. When tension is caused by two disharmonious elements we get dissonance. As leaders, we know when we find a lack of harmony within our teams and organizations and what it can do to our organizational output. When we see a lack of harmony being prepared is important to do the little things right to be at your best when the moment requires it. Jason shares an example of a leader who did not back up their internal messages by going against their own advice.

10:20 – Teams that gossip behind the water cooler are diminishing the culture of an organization. When people aren’t willing to have courageous conversations with others and let things fester things get much worse until there is usually a boiling point and the damage is irrevocable. When people don’t have open, honest conversations, then people begin to feel that cultural dissonance.

12:40 – Jason talks about how some leaders talk about how it is beyond the numbers yet continuously promotes people with good numbers but are tough to work with. This dissonates does damage within the team. No leader and no team is perfect, there will be cultural dissonance that occurs from time to time. The thinking within healthy cultures is the ability to find where that dissonance occurs and then to shift to mitigate the losses. What we allow lingers, and what we teach triggers, listen to the past podcast here

13:50 – The best leaders are listeners, they’re caring, and supportive, this does not mean they are soft, not firm. Their approach is not barking orders but one of support and building a relationship to bolster their development. How they think about what it means to lead isn’t about power and control but sharing power and control. They might be demanding but never tip into demeaning. They have invested so much social equity in relationships they have earned the right to challenge the status quo but never in a demeaning way.

Questions to Ponder

  1. Where is cultural dissonance appearing in your life or culture?

  2. What new thinking, acting, or interacting would help bring alignment to that dissonance you are feeling?

  3. What new ways could you help teach new actions to help trigger a more positive reaction?

ABOUT THE THERMOSTAT

Conversations and micro-thoughts to engage your mind and heart.

A thermostat is proactive. It sets the temperature in a room. Controls the temperature. Regulates the temperature. But in today’s distracted, fast-paced and digital world, it’s easy for individuals and organizations to act more like thermometers, slipping into reactionary thinking, becoming scattered and inconsistent. The most compelling leaders, teams, organizations, families, or collection of humans of any kind operate in thermostat mode. They calibrate their mind and heart to set the temperature for the vision and culture they want to create. Jason Barger, globally celebrated author, keynote speaker, and founder of Step Back Leadership Consulting, is the host of The Thermostat, a podcast journey to discover authentic leadership, create compelling cultures and find clarity of mission, vision, and values.
