“Loneliness is a major problem in organizations today. Here are some observations to combat loneliness in the workplace.”
3:50 – Humans need to have a sense of belonging. They want to feel engaged and connected to the mission. Today we are talking about how to connect with your people and re-engage with your people and create a compelling culture in the workplace.
6:20 – People may go through the motions. The past research shows that meaningful work cultures are important and people want a sense of belonging and yet the Surgeon General has identified that the workplace is a health concern. We talk here on this podcast that culture is shaped each day by our actions and interactions.
8:30 – 51% of employees are actively looking for a new job. Any kind of toxic culture or stagnant culture can jeopardize an organization’s effectiveness and the overall brand of the company can suffer.
9:30 – The HBR recently said that the way businesses are combating this is by intentionally orchestrating empathy throughout their teams. Examples some companies include: begin meetings to increase interactions, create safe environments for each other. Jason thinks this seems a bit inauthentic to him but the intentions are there in that they believe they need to bring people together.
11:11 – A few observations Jason has made include to combat loneliness in the workplace:
- People are still catching their breath from the last few years of weirdo-world. Some are still tired, still getting back into the swing of things.
- People need and want connection – Even those who want to stay remote want to stay connected.
- Clarity on the future – People want clarity and want to get excited about where they are heading and what is their role
- People want to participate in the creation – They want to actively participate in what is being created.
- Make it intention and ongoing – it’s not a one-time thing, this requires the team to think long-term and to continuously find alignment in the culture they want to create. Be committed.

ABOUT THE THERMOSTAT
Conversations and micro-thoughts to engage your mind and heart.
A thermostat is proactive. It sets the temperature in a room. Controls the temperature. Regulates the temperature. But in today’s distracted, fast-paced and digital world, it’s easy for individuals and organizations to act more like thermometers, slipping into reactionary thinking, becoming scattered and inconsistent. The most compelling leaders, teams, organizations, families, or collection of humans of any kind operate in thermostat mode. They calibrate their mind and heart to set the temperature for the vision and culture they want to create. Jason Barger, globally celebrated author, keynote speaker, and founder of Step Back Leadership Consulting, is the host of The Thermostat, a podcast journey to discover authentic leadership, create compelling cultures and find clarity of mission, vision, and values.
