SHOW NOTES

Jason introduces Season 7 episode 30 of the podcast, Rest: Grow Like Bamboo. Welcome back to the podcast on corporate culture and leadership and thank you for listening. We engage thought leaders like CEOs, CFOs, managers, VPs, directors, and more for this podcast. We wish to create content that engages your mind and heart and allows you to step back and think and add some positivity to your life. We deep dive into today’s topic.

We can’t control everything but what we can control is our response. Still a lot of work to do but wanted to remind the audience what is within our control is the temperature we create in the organizations and teams we work with. If you have a suggestion, please send it to info@jasonvbarger.com

“Intentionally allowing our minds and attention to wander, learn and experience, stimulates creativity and ownership thinking.”

3:00 – Jason introduces today’s topic. This is a multi-part series and this is the third part from the last episodes about stepping back for greater effectiveness in the workplace. This is a micropod and shorter by design to carve out time and to rest a little. Stepping back and charging and resting actually shows that elite performance is connected to just that. Jason discovers how rest helps him discover new ideas and to reconnect to the purpose and mission of what he is trying to accomplish. This series is designed to show some strategies on how to flow and grow like bamboo as Jason explains in today’s episode.

6:50 – These episodes are designed to be shorter so that we can easily digest the important lessons within. When Jason wrote his second book, ReMember, he cited a study from the Harvard business review that stated that people switch tasks between 300-500 times per day. People buy into the busyness myth; they equate busyness with effectiveness. It leads to only at 30% productivity rate. The most effective people took time to slow down to speed up thus being more effective with tasks. In Jason’s latest book Breathing Oxygen, he talks about the power of rest and elite performance very well, I highly recommend checking it out. How we rest, how we recharge is as important as the hard work we have to put in. Elite performance is NOT about never coming up for air but about learning how to breathe more efficiently. Resting is as important as the hard work we need to put in. Americans alone leave 768 million days of vacation days unused each year.

11:00 – Listen to the last episodes about rest, today is more on the creativity side. Jason wants his mindset to grow like bamboo to slow down in order to speed up. Bamboo grows underneath the surface, there are many switchbacks. It shoots off in different directions and then when it is ready it grows upward through the surface. The metaphor, as Jason explains, is to allow himself some time to explore to grow in different directions; to wander. It helps us to allow some intentional time off.

For example, with intentional time off, here are some ways that Jason allows himself to grow like bamboo:

  1. Jason once built a beehive for himself and his family when his kids were young. It was a creative challenge.
  2. Jason once wanted to make a great homemade meatball. Slowing down and cooking a nice meal and learning how to do it challenged his mind to think creatively and learn new things.
  3. Jason challenges himself to take different routes than he usually would to places he often travels. This showed Jason that there is more than one way to get somewhere.
  4. Jason honors time to not just be doing but also to learn and to think.
  5. Jason travels to new places; Jason loves to explore and see new things.

Stay tuned for more episodes coming out relating to maximizing performance and the surprising way to do it by actually slowing down. The next episode will be about the role of preparation.

Questions to Ponder

  1. In what ways can you grow like bamboo on your time off?

ABOUT THE THERMOSTAT

Conversations and micro-thoughts to engage your mind and heart.

A thermostat is proactive. It sets the temperature in a room. Controls the temperature. Regulates the temperature. But in today’s distracted, fast-paced and digital world, it’s easy for individuals and organizations to act more like thermometers, slipping into reactionary thinking, becoming scattered and inconsistent. The most compelling leaders, teams, organizations, families, or collection of humans of any kind operate in thermostat mode. They calibrate their mind and heart to set the temperature for the vision and culture they want to create. Jason Barger, globally celebrated author, keynote speaker, and founder of Step Back Leadership Consulting, is the host of The Thermostat, a podcast journey to discover authentic leadership, create compelling cultures and find clarity of mission, vision, and values.
