Season 6 Episode 38: 4 Stages of the Creative Process

Creativity is a process and not a one-time coincidence. It’s not about pure talent or cleverness. Our ability or inability to honor the creative process impacts the outcomes in our life and work.

SHOW NOTES

Jason introduces Season 6 episode 38 of the podcast, 4 Stages of the Creative Process. Welcome back to the podcast on corporate culture and leadership and thank you for listening. We engage thought leaders like CEOs, CFOs, managers, VPs, directors, and more for this podcast. We wish to create content that engages your mind and heart and allows you to step back and think and add some positivity to your life. We deep dive into today’s topic.

We can’t control everything but what we can control is our response. Still a lot of work to do but wanted to remind the audience what is within our control is the temperature we create in the organizations and teams we work with. If you have a suggestion, please send it to info@jasonvbarger.com

“The best teams follow the 5:1 ratio”

7:00 – Jason talks about a book from 1926 called the Art of Thought which identifies the four stages of the creative process. Those four stages are:

  1. Preparation
  2. Incubation
  3. Illumination
  4. Verification

8:40 – Imagine seeing a singer performing or a comic in a crowded bar or even a whitty friend say something so funny and you think, “man, they are so creative” and you think you mind not ever have that yourself. The false narrative losses sight of the hours of preparation and the practice of the passion before the artist on stages even tries to verify it with an audience. The comedian Chris Rock once spoke about the creative process and noted the countless hours of trying his bits and the endless writing he does. The correction involved would be in small clubs always learning and adjusting his delivery until they were on the big stage. The path of creativity is much longer and wider than we typically acknowledge.

11:20 – When Jason wrote his first book, Step Back from the Baggage claim, there was an image that fascinated Jason. He became fascinated with how bamboo grows and even did a podcast of it which you can listen to here. What Jason didn’t know was what was under the surface. Bamboo grows sideways and changes direction and then shoots back and forth under the surface and when it is “ready” it shoots directly up from the ground. We see it straight up from above ground but we never see under the surface. The creative process is a lot like the growth of bamboo. we need to practice a mindset that makes us agile and adaptable and then create space for it to grow.

Questions to Ponder

  1. In what ways could your life and work honor the four stages of the creative process?

  2. What examples in your life and work need a little more creativity?

  3. What practices would help you breathe differently to help you practice this type of thinking in these mindsets?

Jason shares at the end of the episode how to help as part of the book launch team. The best way is to read and share the new book below. It makes a great gift for your team. If you have unique ideas to help share the book contact info@jasonvbarger.com

ABOUT THE THERMOSTAT

Conversations and micro-thoughts to engage your mind and heart.

A thermostat is proactive. It sets the temperature in a room. Controls the temperature. Regulates the temperature. But in today’s distracted, fast-paced and digital world, it’s easy for individuals and organizations to act more like thermometers, slipping into reactionary thinking, becoming scattered and inconsistent. The most compelling leaders, teams, organizations, families, or collection of humans of any kind operate in thermostat mode. They calibrate their mind and heart to set the temperature for the vision and culture they want to create. Jason Barger, globally celebrated author, keynote speaker, and founder of Step Back Leadership Consulting, is the host of The Thermostat, a podcast journey to discover authentic leadership, create compelling cultures and find clarity of mission, vision, and values.
