We can’t control everything but what we can control is our response. Still a lot of work to do but wanted to remind the audience what is within our control is the temperature we create in the organizations and teams we work with. If you have a suggestion, please send it to info@jasonvbarger.com

“It’s our places of employment, these are the cultures that I believe can have the biggest impact on our lives and contribute the most to the culture with the people around us.

5:23 – Jason talks about an interesting article on four trends in 2023 for leaders in a deep dive that Fast Company has provided in this article here.

  1. Your Workplace is on the hook for your well-being
  2. It’s time to focus on a new kind of safety
  3. Don’t just respect differences, design for them
  4. We’re all still in recovery
  5. BONUS – If you didn’t think developing culture and leaders was important before 2020, you know do or should.

7:06 – For number 1, Jason talks about the importance of caring for your team. The surgeon general in October of 2022 said that workplace cultures are having a terrible impact on people’s physical and mental health. How can you better impact your team? Time off, work retreats, and strategic ways to help your team in the coming years are important.

10:30 – For number 2, so much has changed in the world, and the economy, and helping people experience psychological safety is important. During these times, people often turn inward and that can lead to people not sharing ideas, their feelings, or presenting courageous ideas to help challenge the status quo which can better help guide us during these new times. The best teams and organizations will cultivate cultures where people can openly share their hopes and their feelings, and people with opposing views should be encouraged as well to improve the culture.

13:11 – For number 3, most organizational people strategies are built on generalizations. Neuroscience shows us that every person’s brain processes the world differently. We all process the world differently. No two brains are exactly alike or neurodiversity. Understanding and accepting neurodiversity has huge advantages for companies to respect these cognitive differences.

16:30 – For number 4, we are all still in recovery. Over the past three years, we have all experienced intense collective experiences. From the pandemic, to war, to racism and protests, we have all experienced a lot and are recovering together. Every individual experiences things differently. We can’t know everything and we can’t solve everything. We need to practice high levels of emotional intelligence to help our people.

19:40 – For number 5, what Jason is seeing is that it is more important than ever and companies and organizations are realizing how important it is for companies to have a strategy with their people and culture to develop them. We need to design, we need to connect, and then we need to lead our people there.

Questions to Ponder

  1. How is your workplace handling well-being?

  2. What are you doing in terms of psychological safety?

  3. How are you designing your processes for different types of brains?

  4. How are you being realistic that we are all still in recovery?

  5. Do you have a strategy for how you are developing leaders and culture on your team?

ABOUT THE THERMOSTAT

Conversations and micro-thoughts to engage your mind and heart.

A thermostat is proactive. It sets the temperature in a room. Controls the temperature. Regulates the temperature. But in today’s distracted, fast-paced and digital world, it’s easy for individuals and organizations to act more like thermometers, slipping into reactionary thinking, becoming scattered and inconsistent. The most compelling leaders, teams, organizations, families, or collection of humans of any kind operate in thermostat mode. They calibrate their mind and heart to set the temperature for the vision and culture they want to create. Jason Barger, globally celebrated author, keynote speaker, and founder of Step Back Leadership Consulting, is the host of The Thermostat, a podcast journey to discover authentic leadership, create compelling cultures and find clarity of mission, vision, and values.
