Season 7 Episode 20: Understanding Strengths

“Sometimes we don’t even fully know what we do best and what makes us succeed.

3:00 – Jason introduces today’s topic about how we are really good about knowing the things we don’t do well or it is easy to point out what is not working. What we don’t do well and are scared of doing in many cases, we often don’t take the time to fully understand our unique strengths and how we are uniquely positioned to succeed. How are you uniquely positioned to succeed?

6:40 – How can we use our strengths to perform better with others? Leaders who understand their strengths are uniquely positioned to meet performance metrics better and keep people more engaged on their teams.

8:00 – Check out Jason’s past episodes about emotional intelligence to better understand the foundational principles Jason talks about today. Jason defines emotional intelligence which is your ability to recognize yourself, your own emotions and feelings and what you perceive about the feelings of others. Then it is about your ability to use that awareness to manage your relationships.

10:31 – Studies tell us that 58% of all performance is tied to emotional intelligence! Strength’s Finder from Gallop was all about actually helping people understand what strengths we all have within an organization. This test gives people the ability to understand their own strengths and can also sometimes disguise their strengths.

15:30 – When people actually know their strengths really help to manage people and even for that person to understand how they learn things and operate and can change your brain and their brain to think about how they actually learn to provide better results when leading teams. This awareness helps all people but especially with teams. Try the Strength’s Finder tool and see what attributes you and your team have.

Questions to Ponder

  1. Do you know your own strengths and those of your teammates?

  2. Can you articulate the strategy to better leverage the strengths of team members?

  3. How would you advise others to best collaborate with you? What are the tips you would give?

  4. Are you willing to listen to tips for collaborating with others you may work with?

ABOUT THE THERMOSTAT

Conversations and micro-thoughts to engage your mind and heart.

A thermostat is proactive. It sets the temperature in a room. Controls the temperature. Regulates the temperature. But in today’s distracted, fast-paced and digital world, it’s easy for individuals and organizations to act more like thermometers, slipping into reactionary thinking, becoming scattered and inconsistent. The most compelling leaders, teams, organizations, families, or collection of humans of any kind operate in thermostat mode. They calibrate their mind and heart to set the temperature for the vision and culture they want to create. Jason Barger, globally celebrated author, keynote speaker, and founder of Step Back Leadership Consulting, is the host of The Thermostat, a podcast journey to discover authentic leadership, create compelling cultures and find clarity of mission, vision, and values.
