We wish to create content that engages your mind and heart and allows you to step back and think and add some positivity to your life. We deep dive into today’s topic.

We can’t control everything but what we can control is our response. Still a lot of work to do but wanted to remind the audience what is within our control is the temperature we create in the organizations and teams we work with. If you have a suggestion, please send it to info@jasonvbarger.com

“Believing you can make a difference is a powerful current that carries through everything you do.

5:40 – Jason talks about the previous episodes in the series about culture shaping and the series we are currently on found here. Fast Company found one of the trends is We are all still in recovery. From the pandemic to intense racism to school shootings, these issues still exist and have and will impact our lives ongoing. Divorce has been up, and mental health concerns are up. What this means in the workplace is how our needs may be different in a post-traumatic context.

9:45 – Some are still recovering from some intense shockwaves that continue. Research shows that when recovering from collective trauma we are hyper-vigilant to micro-traumas. Reactions can vary based on the topic at hand, all leaders need to use a high level of emotional intelligence in order to be aware of what people might be experiencing.

11:10 – Jason provides some tips, some research-based, and some practices that Jason even does with some organizations he works with.

  1. At a time when we are all still in recovery, listening campaigns are important. Creating a strategy to get out and be with your people and listen to your people is very important. What are your people feeling? What is the baggage, what are they experiencing now from perhaps tiredness or fatigue that things might land with them differently today?
  2. Get back to laughing. Some places certainly are but the world has been heavy and in many ways it still is. Jason sees more organizations planning big events. Let your people let loose and have fun and reward them as that is important. With political uncertainty and economic uncertainty, businesses can fall into very serious modes. Get back to laughing and enjoy the journey. It says that we are going to seek joy and find ourselves laughing even in the midst of challenges.
  3. We have to honor rest and recovery. Listen to the secret to elite performance. We need a new association with the word, REST. Recognize the difference between rest and recovery. Recovery is often a vacation, sabbatical, or time off so that your body and mind can recover that just resting cannot conquer. Serious athletes do this well. All our performance raises when we are healthier collectively.
  4. The final observation relates to all of these, if you didn’t think developing leaders and cultures was important before 2020, you know do or should. Going back to what it was pre-pandemic means you will just go backward. The best leaders are designing, connecting, and leading the way into that intentional way for the future with intention.

Questions to Ponder

  1. How can you incorporate the listening campaign in your organization?

  2. How are you honoring rest and recovery?

  3. Are you acknowledging that we all may still be in recovery?

ABOUT THE THERMOSTAT

Conversations and micro-thoughts to engage your mind and heart.

A thermostat is proactive. It sets the temperature in a room. Controls the temperature. Regulates the temperature. But in today’s distracted, fast-paced and digital world, it’s easy for individuals and organizations to act more like thermometers, slipping into reactionary thinking, becoming scattered and inconsistent. The most compelling leaders, teams, organizations, families, or collection of humans of any kind operate in thermostat mode. They calibrate their mind and heart to set the temperature for the vision and culture they want to create. Jason Barger, globally celebrated author, keynote speaker, and founder of Step Back Leadership Consulting, is the host of The Thermostat, a podcast journey to discover authentic leadership, create compelling cultures and find clarity of mission, vision, and values.
