“Storytelling has a huge impact… learn the narratives that great leaders seem to master”
Today’s podcast was inspired by an article by Nick Westergaard from the Harvard Business Review. Jason investigates how important stories are for leaders and the narratives the very best leaders seem to master. Jason shares his thoughts and insights from the Harvard Business Review article about the 5 stories leaders tell.
3:50 – Whenever Jason asks, “tell the most compelling leader you have experienced in your life” often they tell a story and paint an image and passionately about a future and something they want to create and that others want to be part of.
8:10 – We are more likely to remember when it is told by a story. What are the stories we are perpetuating and sharing with the people around us? Are they the stories that want to help lead us into the future we want to create?
9:20 – Here are the 5 stories that the great cultures share often and perpetuate.
- The Vision Story – The best leaders tell a story of the future that does not exist yet. The focus is on that future and what it could look like. MLK Jr’s I have a Dream speech is a classic example of a vision story.
- The Values Story – The focus is to help model for people what it looks like to live and work for not just what we do but how we do it. Jason shares a great story from Zoom CEO and also from Cameron Mitchell restaurants.
- The Progress Story – These stories are rooted in that we are all a work in progress. Even Michael Jordan was cut from his high school varsity team.
- The Trust Story – Vulnerability is always important and never as important as it is now! People want to trust people and know that their intentions are genuine. An example is when a leader shares about struggles in their own marriage, or mental health impacts in life and work.
- The Action Story – The focus is to compel others in the team to make it real. An example comes from Nike’s founder, his slogan was Just Do It and that was how he built the company on. He went after major athletes to go beyond just being a running shoe until finally he landed Michael Jordan which changed the future of Nike as a company.
Questions to Ponder
-
What stories are you telling to yourself personally but also perpetuating with your team?
-
Which of these stories are needed most to stimulate progress – A vision story, a trust story, a values story, a progress story, or an action story?

ABOUT THE THERMOSTAT
Conversations and micro-thoughts to engage your mind and heart.
A thermostat is proactive. It sets the temperature in a room. Controls the temperature. Regulates the temperature. But in today’s distracted, fast-paced and digital world, it’s easy for individuals and organizations to act more like thermometers, slipping into reactionary thinking, becoming scattered and inconsistent. The most compelling leaders, teams, organizations, families, or collection of humans of any kind operate in thermostat mode. They calibrate their mind and heart to set the temperature for the vision and culture they want to create. Jason Barger, globally celebrated author, keynote speaker, and founder of Step Back Leadership Consulting, is the host of The Thermostat, a podcast journey to discover authentic leadership, create compelling cultures and find clarity of mission, vision, and values.
