Could we actually make the choice to love and care about those on our team and throughout our organization? If we want to create meaningful cultures and relationships, it might be time to lead.
SHOW NOTES
Jason introduces Season 7 episode 7 of the podcast, Love Your People. Welcome back to the podcast on corporate culture and leadership and thank you for listening. We engage thought leaders like CEOs, CFOs, managers, VPs, directors, and more for this podcast. We wish to create content that engages your mind and heart and allows you to step back and think and add some positivity to your life. We deep dive into today’s topic.
We can’t control everything but what we can control is our response. Still a lot of work to do but wanted to remind the audience what is within our control is the temperature we create in the organizations and teams we work with. If you have a suggestion, please send it to info@jasonvbarger.com

“Loving our people helps us be better at everything we strive to do“
3:45 – Jason talks about Howard Behar, former President of Starbucks, and past podcasts and talks with him. Howard introduced the idea at Starbucks to love your people. Today we talk about the idea of how to love your people in your work cultures and why it should be done also. Hint: it helps us be better at everything we strive to do.
7:20 – Love is: an intense feeling of deep affection. We are not talking about romantic love in this context of work culture. Jason shares a funny disclaimer for HR departments listening here as well. Friend and fellow speaker and author John Acuff says it’s about, “caring about what the people you care about care about.” Jason asks some great questions about love.
11:30 – Loving someone doesn’t mean you have to be best friends or even alike. It may begin with acknowledging that the people around you are different than you. They think differently, they want different things, and they come to most situations differently than you. Do you honor the relationship with them? Having an appreciation for those differences and the people that are helping to cocreate the culture with us is important.
12:55 – Next, we need to listen and seek. In order to know what our people care about, we must listen and seek out that information. If we don’t actually care we won’t take the time to:
- Watch
- Listen
- Ask
- Act
14:10 – Think about the people in your organization, what is it that they really care about? Can we incorporate as many elements of that which our people are about? How can we show deep affection in ways they care about?
14:50 – The third thing Jason shares in terms of loving our people is the fact that Love Does. Love comes to life in action. It’s not just about posters on the wall, we have to follow it up with action. Love and caring for our people is about intentionality and action.
Questions to Ponder
-
Who are you actively choosing to love in your life and work?
-
In what ways could you honor and care about even those who are different than you?
-
What’s the proactive plan to put love and care into action within your culture?

ABOUT THE THERMOSTAT
Conversations and micro-thoughts to engage your mind and heart.
A thermostat is proactive. It sets the temperature in a room. Controls the temperature. Regulates the temperature. But in today’s distracted, fast-paced and digital world, it’s easy for individuals and organizations to act more like thermometers, slipping into reactionary thinking, becoming scattered and inconsistent. The most compelling leaders, teams, organizations, families, or collection of humans of any kind operate in thermostat mode. They calibrate their mind and heart to set the temperature for the vision and culture they want to create. Jason Barger, globally celebrated author, keynote speaker, and founder of Step Back Leadership Consulting, is the host of The Thermostat, a podcast journey to discover authentic leadership, create compelling cultures and find clarity of mission, vision, and values.
