SHOW NOTES

Jason introduces Season 6 episode 48 of the podcast, The Gift of Presence. Welcome back to the podcast on corporate culture and leadership and thank you for listening. We engage thought leaders like CEOs, CFOs, managers, VPs, directors, and more for this podcast. We wish to create content that engages your mind and heart and allows you to step back and think and add some positivity to your life. We deep dive into today’s topic.

We can’t control everything but what we can control is our response. Still a lot of work to do but wanted to remind the audience what is within our control is the temperature we create in the organizations and teams we work with. If you have a suggestion, please send it to info@jasonvbarger.com

“Give the gift of presence with yourself and the people you are with”

5:45 – Jason shares his stories about the TCL event this year and notes the recap episode which you can listen to here. We are targeting Friday, November 3rd, 2023 for next year’s event in Columbus Ohio.

“This is the first wildest and the wisest thing I know, that the soul exists and is built entirely out of attentiveness.” – Mary Oliver

9:47 – We are better as leaders, better spouses, better friends, and better people when we are truly present in the moment with what needs our attention, and our attentiveness at the moment.

10:39 – Jason invites you to do an exercise of slowing yourself down while listening to this podcast. Hopefully this podcast each week is a moment to slow yourself down and just breathe.

A few quick on-the-run tips:

  1. Have awareness around when you begin to feel sped up.

  2. Be able to name the things that are occupying your mind. What are those things? Name them out loud or in your mind.

  3. Shift your attention to acknowledge what it is you can control in the moment and name what you cant control now (weather, pandemic, stock market)

  4. Shift your attention back to where you want to be. Where you look is where you go. What are the highest priorities you want to give you attention to?

  5. Name your intention. Practice and focus on your intention.

15:30 – Jason practices this kind of thinking even when he is not feeling sped up. Jason practices before every meeting he has, every speech he has. He practices bringing his attention to the moment to be with the people he is there to be with.

Questions to Ponder

  1. What tends to steal your attentiveness?

  2. Who or what needs your attentiveness these days?

  3. How can you practice giving or sharing the gift of presence over the next few weeks at a time when so much is happening around us?

Jason shares at the end of the episode how to help as part of the book launch team. The best way is to read and share the new book below. It makes a great gift for your team. If you have unique ideas to help share the book contact info@jasonvbarger.com

ABOUT THE THERMOSTAT

Conversations and micro-thoughts to engage your mind and heart.

A thermostat is proactive. It sets the temperature in a room. Controls the temperature. Regulates the temperature. But in today’s distracted, fast-paced and digital world, it’s easy for individuals and organizations to act more like thermometers, slipping into reactionary thinking, becoming scattered and inconsistent. The most compelling leaders, teams, organizations, families, or collection of humans of any kind operate in thermostat mode. They calibrate their mind and heart to set the temperature for the vision and culture they want to create. Jason Barger, globally celebrated author, keynote speaker, and founder of Step Back Leadership Consulting, is the host of The Thermostat, a podcast journey to discover authentic leadership, create compelling cultures and find clarity of mission, vision, and values.
