“None of us are a finished product

3:23 – We are now 6 weeks removed from the major holiday season and Jason is reminded of three dreaded words, “some assembly required”. For many parents, those words strike fear when they see them on gifts for loved ones. On today’s podcast we are going to be talking about those words and what they might teach us.

6:37 – Developing leaders and teachers and teams it is important to be reminded that some assembly will be required. Jason is not talking at you but with you as he looks in the mirror himself as well. Three things to be reminded of:

  1. It won’t naturally happen, and we can’t hide from it. – We would love every tool and experience to be turnkey and it just works. The reality is developing people and culture doesn’t work that way.
  2. None of us are a finished product – Jason says he needs this reminder from time to time. He has more to learn, to contribute, to experience. From his marriage, to his friends, to his kids relationships are not a finished products. Listen to Jason’s podcast about the 6 A’s of change process here. Also, read Jason’s book, Thermostat Cultures where the framework is centered around the 6 A’s of change.
  3. Do we have a plan for this assembling that is required? Some instructions are better than others. It is frustrating when you can see the plan. Think of that from a team perspective. For you personally what is your plan for the year ahead? What is the plan to develop people on the road ahead?

13:30 – Jason talks about planning and how to lead your team to having solutions for the year ahead.

Questions to Ponder

  1. In what ways would you like to grow personally in the year ahead?

  2. In what ways would you like your team and your culture to grow in the year ahead?

  3. What’s the proactive plan to assemble the team and lead the development that is required?

ABOUT THE THERMOSTAT

Conversations and micro-thoughts to engage your mind and heart.

A thermostat is proactive. It sets the temperature in a room. Controls the temperature. Regulates the temperature. But in today’s distracted, fast-paced and digital world, it’s easy for individuals and organizations to act more like thermometers, slipping into reactionary thinking, becoming scattered and inconsistent. The most compelling leaders, teams, organizations, families, or collection of humans of any kind operate in thermostat mode. They calibrate their mind and heart to set the temperature for the vision and culture they want to create. Jason Barger, globally celebrated author, keynote speaker, and founder of Step Back Leadership Consulting, is the host of The Thermostat, a podcast journey to discover authentic leadership, create compelling cultures and find clarity of mission, vision, and values.
